This course aims to support students in developing their painting practice. Participants are encouraged to look at their narratives and challenge their respective positions against the broad and manifold contexts in which painting exists. The group will consider the complex relations between the perspectives of the artist and the viewer. In-class discussions will focus on the historical and psychosocial dimensions of painting besides how painting is understood as a consequence of socio-political forces. Furthermore, students learn specific art histories from which painting evolves and how any practice reads concerning its surroundings. Each participant’s studio practice is the main focus of the course, arranged around a daily structure. Mornings will host presentations led by the course teachers, and guided readings are carried out. Through one-to-one consultations, students will be encouraged to scrutinise and expand upon their working methods. The teachers will share their expertise, providing in-depth technical support. In the evenings, feedback sessions are held. Participants will have the possibility to present their paintings, allowing them to gain confidence in discussing their work. Group excursions will also take place. Besides the focus on the production of new work, the course supports participants in acquiring the critical tools necessary to contextualise their work within contemporary artistic discourses.

*If necessary, the course may be held exclusively online.

Nadira Husain, born in Paris in 1980, works in Berlin, Paris, and Hyderabad (IN). Her work appropriates symbols and stories from various cultural registers that relate to her own multicultural background. Through the flattening of fore- and background, perspective and scale, Husain’s depthless paintings eliminate inherent formal hierarchies. Through her work, Husain evolves a language that embraces hybridity, mimicry and ambivalence. Her paintings often unfold into spatial installations where the notion of a centre is swept away. Through her expanded form of painting, she solicits the performative character of her work. She is also involved in anti-racist art collectives.

Flora Klein’s artistic practice consists primarily of abstract painting and is characterised through stylistic shifts and differences. In her recent works, Klein deepens her preoccupation with reflective metallic paints as well as the emblematically modernist, masculine structure of the grid. Affirmative in scale, Klein’s work remains consciously ambivalent in how it relates to both the allegorical and the less communicable nature of intensity and colour, or affect. Alongside her painting practice, Klein has instigated various projects for social exchange. She has coordinated multiple exhibition spaces, and co-organises the Curbit experimental interdisciplinary festival.
