Hubert Scheibl is one of the most important Austrian creative artists of his generation. He has held successful exhibitions worldwide since the mid-1980s, most recently in Australia in early 2018. In his Artist’s Talk with Hildegund Amanshauser, he will offer insights into his working method, his many sources of inspiration, and his intensive relationship with film and music. Scheibl and Amanshauser have a long history in common, beginning in 1986 with the exhibition Hacken im Eis, in the then Museum of the 20th Century in Vienna (now Belvedere 21). Fundamental questions of contemporary painting will be discussed, as well as the art world and the role of the artist in modern society.

Hubert Scheibl belongs to the generation of painters who created an international furore during the 1980s in what was known as “wild painting”. Since then, he has continued to develop his varied oeuvre, alternating between total abstraction and the use of figurative elements. He positions his work within a wide range which includes not only painting, but also photography, film, trash and everyday cultural phenomena.
