Mette Sterre: There’s No Flesh

20 May -10 June 2023

Friday, 19 May

6 pm Artist talk

7 pm Opening

Bodies liquefy when their appearance combines with new technologies contrary to cultural notions. Mette Sterre’s (b. 1983, Delft/Netherlands) work constantly reappropriates and appreciates bodies in techno-social contexts. Drawing on ideas of post/transhumanism queer/feminism and science fiction the artist approaches bodies more than as just a substantial mass (flesh). Voluminous body suits 3D-printed figures and the fusion of different materials such as plastic and oil together with the human body show a world where bodies resemble their surroundings and thus point to a future beyond anthropocentrism.

On Solidarity is a curated film programme that explores films by Ukrainian artists in times of war and violence.

Anna Scherbyna / Valentina PetrovaSisters (2019), 12 Min.

20 May -10 June 2023

The film Sisters is dedicated to the anti-feminist conservative women’s movement Sisterhood of St. Olha, which rejects an open definition of gender and postulates a patriarchal society where women do not have the right to vote. The ambivalence of the movement’s leader is unmistakable in her quest for reverse emancipation and power. It attempts to analyse and ironically reflect the image of the anti-feminist activists: Members of the fictional Sisterhood of Saint Mary of Egypt fight for unequal rights and paint their nails. In a world full of temptations and perversions, they must resist. Can these beautiful and brave women, who don’t wear trousers, save the traditional family values of patriarchy?

RECOMMENDATION

Oskar Kokoschka: Stormy years in Berlin

Kokoschka Museum Pöchlarn

6 May – 26 October 2023

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Oskar Kokoschka Documentation, the Kokoschka Museum Pöchlarn invites you to the exhibition Oskar Kokoschka. Stormy years in Berlin. Kokoschka’s explicit depictions of femicides and structural patriarchal violence are shockingly relevant today. His radical form language in painting and graphics has fascinated artists for many generations, as shown by the exhibition project “Kokoschka in Dialogue” with students from the Department of Painting and Animated Film at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. This cooperation will continue with Salzburg’s summer academy around the “School of Seeing” concept later in the fall.
