The interaction between oneself and one’s environment can be expressed through the use of photographic media. The creation of a personal visual language and individual narratives as well as the importance of design in photography will be central elements of the curriculum. The course will focus on exploring and understanding the way we perceive ourselves and the society we live in. Diversity (demographic, cognitive, and experiential) and the concept of the gaze of the Other will be essential topics in the course.

Acquiring a knowledge of the medium of photography opens new horizons and possibilities. The primary emphasis of the course will be on experimentation, techniques, and critiques, and there will also be extensive discussions and feedback on the students’ work. In the technical tutorials and analyses, students will work in groups but will also participate in one-on-one mentoring sessions.

Students will work on their own projects using cameras and phones, or photographic archival material and found images.
Christina Dimitriadis was born in 1967 in Thessaloniki, where she grew up in a multicultural family ranging from Helgoland in the north, Salzburg in the middle and Istanbul in the south-east. She uses photography as a medium to express an autobiographical stance based on human relationships in terms of the concept of identity. The notion of experience and memory are the primary tools of her work. The minimalistic design of her photographs in colours and shapes tries to capture and save what time always takes from us.

“A way to interpret the layers of my work as a conceptual photographer is to picture what happens when you throw a pebble into a body of water: the surface of the water makes symmetrical concentric waves. My practice works the same way – a vibration of parallel cycles, starting with the individual and going to the personal, the social, the political, the historical”.
