Playboard

Ad Minoliti (b. 1980, Buenos Aires) brings together ideas from art and subculture as well as science and ethics to reflect on modern world-making. Drawing on the heritage of geometric abstraction in Latin America, she presents alternative universes influenced by a non-binary attitude. In murals of geometric forms together with paintings reminiscent of space missions or children’s toys, Minoliti finds pictorial alternatives to a world encoded in dichotomies: nature and culture, human and machine, female and male. The exhibition becomes a game board in which images and their references and definitions constantly shift. In bringing together (queer) feminist theory, animalism and childhood, Ad Minoliti allows identities, orientations and subversions to stand in the space equally.

Ad Minoliti's works tie in with the criticism of the painter Kokoschka with a perspective of "extended painting" that moves from the surface into space. Ad Minoliti works with traditions of abstraction and changes their meaning through a critical queer-feminist point of view. In the exhibition series at the Traklhaus, extended painting transcends the framework of purely artistic questions. It addresses how representation can still function - or who is represented and how - and criticises the binary opposition of abstraction and representationalism.

Ad Minoliti lives and works in Argentina. Ad Minoliti's work is exhibited internationally, including in galleries, institutions and museums in Korea, Peru, Mexico, Japan, Brazil, China, Bolivia, Chile and other countries. Recent projects have been shown at ICA Los Angeles (US), MCA Puerto Rico, TANK Shanghai (CN), Fondation Pernod Ricard, MoMA Buenos Aires, Times Museum Guangzhou (CN), MASS MoCA (US), Kunsthalle Lisbon and Tallinn Art Hall. Recent solo exhibitions have taken place at BALTIC and Tate St. Ives (UK), CCC OD (FR), Antenna Space (CN) and La Casa Encendida (ES).
