“It was in the years after the Revolution, the Uprisings, the Chaos, the Counter-revolution, the Coup d’état, and the Consolidation – which lasted for an hour or a lifetime, that she started writing letters to her friends back home. She addressed them to: Dear Animal, and signed: The Dolphin.”

This was the opening line of a video-presentation Maha Maamoun made recently in which she presented excerpts from the Dear Animal collection of notes, which Egyptian activist Azza Shaaban started writing and posting on her facebook wall, after she left Egypt in 2013 (until the present) to settle in India.

“These, as well as other references to animals in the works of a number of Egyptian activists, writers and artists around me, triggered my current research interest in the animal. Though the animal subject is a new research interest for me, what is not new in my practice is the act of taking a recurrent visual and linguistic trope or symbol as the entry point to discussing underlying structures of meaning. In this talk, I will share with you examples of this approach in my work.” (Maha Maamoun)
