Artists in Residence

Since 2010, each year a writer and a photographer are accompanying the Summer Academy. Their subjective view of activities in the classes and at the public events will appear in a text and a series of photographs.

The photographer is selected in concurrence with Christine Frisinghelli (Camera Austria, Graz) and the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg. Started by world-renowned photographer David Goldblatt in 1989, the Market Photo Workshop is a school of photography, a resource centre for practising photographers, and a photographic gallery. At the outset, the aim was to provide visual literacy and practical training to aspiring photographers who were excluded from formal training in tertiary education institutions by the racially discriminatory policies of the apartheid government.

After a few years, when several writers and photographers have cast an artistic and documentary eye over the Summer Academy and the people who constitute it, the unique quality of this institution, its history and location, the multilingualism of the international teachers and students and the resultant atmosphere, which has a lasting influence on many of the participants, will be in some measure conveyed, shown through a subjective filter.
